Shrink Wrapped Windows

Shrink Wrapped Windows

Now that the heat is here, avoid storing your windows in shrink wrap outside. The heat from the
sun can cause significant damage to your new windows even before they are installed.

Now that the heat is here, avoid storing your windows in shrink wrap outside. The heat from the
sun can cause significant damage to your new windows even before they are installed.

What Happens

Shrink wrap is made of polyethylene plastic which means it rapidly deteriorates when exposed
to UV radiation. Excessive heat ends up tightening the shrink wrap enough to cause damage to
the window. A way to think of it is that when it heats up it looks like boiled fusilli noodles and
when it cools down it resembles farfalle noodles.

What To Do Instead

Instead of storing them in direct sunlight, place them in the shade or under some type of
covering. Another thing that will help avoid sun damage is to avoid stacking the windows. You
can also cut the shrink wrap enough for the heat to escape.

Again, this only happens a few times a year when it gets hot enough, but you would rather be
safe than sorry. The longer you have your windows sit in the hot sun, the more damage there is.
