If you have experience installing windows, install windows as a profession, or are well knowledged in the area of window installation then you are most likely capable of installing your windows at home. If you are an avid D-I-Y expert but lack experience with installing windows, this is where you should be a bit more timid and consider the rest of the factors and outcomes at stake. 

The difficulty level of the task is another important factor to keep in mind when deciding whether you should hire a professional or do it yourself. If it is a standard size and shape window going into newer construction, you will not bump into as many challenges VS if you were to install it into an older home with surprise challenges. Another thing to consider is how many windows you are installing as this can be a very time-consuming process and you will need to have an appropriate amount of time allotted to ensure the task is completed with care

The tools you have available will determine whether or not you are capable of completing the task. Window installation requires specialized tools such as a nail gun, waterproof shims, caulk gun, pry bar, putty knife, and more. You should ensure that you have all tools necessary before beginning the window installation so you don’t have to leave a project half complete while you acquire the rest of the tools necessary to complete the installation.

What Nails to Use for Self-Installation of Windows

One of the most common questions asked by DIY window installers is which nails are the best and most efficient to use for window installation. The hardware used to install a window relies heavily upon what type of window you are installing. If the window you are installing is going into new construction and has a nail fin, you should use either an exterior grade nail (roofing nail) or an exterior grade screw to secure the window. Make sure the nail or screw securely fits into the framing of the wall. Do not place a nail or screw within 6” of each corner. Nails/screws should be set no more than 12” apart. It’s important to use an exterior grade nail to ensure that it can withstand the temperature change and elements that the hardware will endure over time. 

When choosing a nail or screw to use for window installation, another very important factor to take into consideration is what type of material your window is made of. Different materials will respond differently to nail and screw types, as well as the longevity of the fastener.
